Silk Care
Care silk duvet
Silk is naturally hypoallergenic, and care is taken during the preparation of the silk for our duvets that no chemicals are used, ensuring that the natural properties are not compromised in any way. Although this is not of primary importance for many users it does mean that all users will enjoy the natural healthy benefits that silk provides.
As luxury items, the 100% Mulberry silk duvets require a greater degree of care, relative to duvets with other fillings, both in their usage and cleaning:
- You should always protect your silk duvet with a removable washable cover.
- A properly covered silk duvet should not require cleaning under normal conditions of use. Unlike duvets with a feather and down filling, silk-filled duvets are free from dust mites and as you don't perspire when using them they should not require thorough cleaning. We recommend that the duvet is regularly aired outside on a sunny day without a duvet cover for a minimum of 2 hours, 2 to 3 times a year. This has the effect of cleaning and purifying the silk floss.
- Do not dry-clean your silk duvet as silk should not be cleaned with any form of chemical cleaner (such as those used in dry cleaning processes). Chemicals will not only affect the silks natural properties but also cause it to harden, thus reducing its softness.
- Washing your silk duvet, whether in a machine or by hand, may cause the silk to lose some of its natural properties. Neither do we recommend you wring or tumble dry your silk duvet.
This rejuvenates the silk inside the duvet and dries out any moisture that many be retained my the silk. All silk filled duvets can be spot cleaned but for full cleaning they need to be professionally cleaned. This is because the silk inside the duvet is susceptible to high heat that can be generated in washing machines and tumble dryers.
Care silk bed linen
It is a fact that good silk linen will outlast cotton and synthetic bed linen when properly cared for.
The most common mistake made in caring for silk linen is incorrect cleaning techniques. Silk linen needs to be washed in warm not hot water and a silk detergent should be used.
- Machine wash at 30°C or hand wash with a gentle detergent. Air dry and cool iron.
- Never tumble dry it.
Silk linen often has a very high thread count and as a result is susceptible to pulling when washed. To ensure this doesn't happen when washing your silk in a washing machine, protect it by placing it inside a cotton duvet cover or something similar.
The most important thing about looking after silk after it has been washed is not to let it dry completely until you have decided how you want to finish it. Because silk dries quickly it is relatively easy to iron. When the silk is ‘ironing dry
