Zhou Fang, a famous painter in mid Tang Dynasty, was born in Jingzhao (today’s Xi’an in Shanxi Province). Well-known for portraits, Buddha figures and paintings of court ladies, Zhou Fang formed a unique painting style of his own, accepted as Zhou Style, making him an outstanding portrait painters after Wu Daozi. Ranking in the top ten masterpieces in China, Court Ladies with Hair-pinned Flowers was one of the representative paintings of Zhou Fang, whose composition and conception are unique and remarkable. The painting has four parts, each of which has a central figure who is walking the dog, or rambling, or staring at the flowers or playing with the butterfly, and all of these construct a complete picture. It is an authentic depiction of leisurely and peaceful life of ladies in court. The sublimity unique to court ladies in Tang Dynasty is portrayed with earthy, classic and elegant brushstrokes, impressive color and the hierarchical perception.
