Momme (pronounced \u201cmoe-mee\u201d) is a traditional way of measuring silk\u2019s weight. Lighter silks like 19 or 22 Momme are popular for summer clothing or everyday bedding. They\u2019re soft, breathable, and easy to wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But 30 Momme is a different category altogether. It packs much more silk into every square inch of fabric\u2014sometimes 50% more than a 19 Momme piece. That kind of density demands more raw silk, but more importantly, it demands better silk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why? Because in high-density weaving, even the tiniest imperfection becomes obvious. One weak fiber can ruin the smooth, flawless finish. That\u2019s why only top-grade Mulberry silk\u2014what we call 5A or 6A grade\u2014is used for 30 Momme fabrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When you\u2019re weaving a fabric as dense as 30 Momme, the physical stress on the silk is intense. The machines pull it, stretch it, and run it through tight, high-speed patterns. If the silk isn\u2019t strong and clean, it will snap, fuzz, or stretch out of shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n High-grade Mulberry silk has the properties needed to survive and shine in this process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lower-grade silk simply can\u2019t hold up. It may look fine at first, but after a few uses or washes, it loses its charm.
