Which GSM Should You Choose?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

GSM stands for grams per square metre and describes the weight of silk filling distributed across each square metre of the duvet. A higher GSM means more silk filling per unit of area, generally resulting in a fuller duvet. However, the warmth you experience also depends on the duvet’s construction, outer fabric, bedroom temperature and other bedding layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For hot summers and naturally warm bedrooms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you live in a region with hot summers, such as parts of southern Europe or the southern United States, and tend to feel warm at night, 100\u2013150 GSM<\/strong> may be a useful starting point. This range is worth considering if you prefer a particularly light duvet with minimal covering weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For warm climates with air-conditioned bedrooms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you live in a warm climate but sleep with the air conditioning on, your bedroom may be considerably cooler than the outdoor temperature. If you prefer a light duvet but want a little more coverage against the cool air, consider starting around 150\u2013200 GSM<\/strong>, then adjusting according to your sleeping environment and personal comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For year-round use in a temperature-controlled home<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want a duvet for regular use throughout the year and your bedroom temperature remains relatively stable, 250\u2013300 GSM<\/strong> may be a useful reference range. These options provide more filling than a lightweight summer duvet and may suit those who prefer a fuller covering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For cold winters and cooler bedrooms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you live in a colder climate, keep your bedroom cool at night, or tend to feel cold while sleeping, consider 300\u2013400 GSM or higher<\/strong>. More silk filling generally creates a fuller duvet and may contribute to greater warmth, although actual thermal performance also depends on the duvet’s construction and sleeping environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These ranges are intended as general guidance, not fixed warmth ratings. The same GSM can feel different depending on bedroom temperature, duvet construction and individual preferences. If none of the standard options meets your needs, you can also request a custom filling weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding GSM and Total Silk Filling Weight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

GSM and total silk filling weight are closely related, but they describe different measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GSM refers to the weight of silk filling per square metre. The total amount of silk required for a duvet depends on both its GSM and its surface area. Therefore, two duvets with the same GSM but different dimensions will require different total filling weights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The calculation is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Total silk filling weight (g) = Duvet area (m\u00b2) \u00d7 GSM (g\/m\u00b2)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you already know how much silk filling you want in grams, you can also calculate the corresponding GSM:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GSM = Desired silk filling weight (g) \u00f7 Duvet area (m\u00b2)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, suppose you would like a US Queen-size duvet measuring 231 \u00d7 231 cm<\/strong>, with 1,500 g of silk filling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, calculate the duvet area:2.31 \u00d7 2.31 = 5.3361 m\u00b2<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then divide the desired filling weight by the area: 1,500 \u00f7 5.3361 \u2248 281 GSM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The corresponding specification would therefore be approximately 281 GSM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same calculation works with measurements in inches. For a duvet measuring 100 \u00d7 110 inches<\/strong>, the area is approximately 7.0968 m\u00b2. If you want 1,500 g of silk filling, the corresponding GSM would be approximately 211 GSM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
