How to Design Your Custom Silk Twilly?

custom silk twilly design

Designing a unique custom silk twilly is a fun and creative process. At ElleSilk, we specialize in high-quality custom silk twilly and scarves. Over time, we have noticed one common issue: many customers are not familiar with the production details of Twilly scarves. As a result, the design files they submit often do not meet the production requirements. This leads to extra back-and-forth communication and delays the overall process.

To help you submit your design more easily and efficiently, this guide explains how Twilly scarves are made, what your design file should include, and key details to pay attention to. Once you understand these points, it will be much easier to prepare a design that looks perfect in the final product.

How Twilly Scarves Are Made

At ElleSilk, we offer two styles of  twilly scarves:

Angled Twilly: ends are cut at an angle for a more dynamic look
Straight Twilly: ends are cut straight for a clean and simple style

Both styles follow the same production process:

• The full design is printed on silk fabric
• The fabric is folded in half lengthwise
• The folded fabric is sewn to create a long, narrow finished scarf

This folding process is very important to understand. Even though the finished Twilly is 5 cm wide, the design must cover 10 cm of fabric. This ensures that the two sides of the folded scarf match perfectly.

Design File Dimensions

Customers often ask if they should submit a 5 cm wide design since the final scarf is 5 cm wide. In fact, you need to submit a 10 cm wide main design because of the folding process.

Here is the correct size:
• Main design area: 10 cm wide × 86 cm high
• The left 5 cm and right 5 cm of the design will appear on the front and back of the folded scarf

If you only submit a 5 cm wide design, the final scarf will have missing or misaligned parts of the design.

Double-Sided Design Tips

The folding process allows you to design the front and back of the Twilly scarf differently. This is a great opportunity to create a more interesting and versatile look.

Here is how the design corresponds to the finished scarf:

• Left 5 cm → front side (Side A)
• Right 5 cm → back side (Side B)

You can choose either of these design options:

Different designs: create a different look on each side for more variety when wearing the scarf
Same design: create a symmetrical look; in this case, be careful with how the design connects when folded

If you use the same design on both sides, here are some tips:

Text direction: make sure text can be read correctly on both sides after folding; avoid upside-down text
Pattern connection: use a mirrored design to ensure a seamless connection across the fold; avoid any breaks or mismatched areas

Bleed Area Considerations

To keep the edges of the finished scarf neat and clean, the design file must include a bleed area. During production, the edges of the fabric are folded in and sewn. The bleed area is needed to allow for this process.

Bleed area requirement: 0.7 cm on all four sides

Keep in mind that the bleed area will not be fully visible on the finished scarf. Do not place any important elements in this area, such as:
• Logo
• Text
• Key design elements
• Borders or framing elements

All key design content should stay within the main design area (10 cm wide × 86 cm high) to make sure it appears as expected on the final product.

Bleed Design Options

Depending on your style and branding, you can choose different ways to handle the edge design:

Full bleed: extend the design naturally into the bleed area for a modern and seamless look. Be aware that the very edges will be folded in.
Background color bleed: use a solid background color or gradient in the bleed area to ensure that the main design remains intact.
Framed design: add a border or intentional white space to clearly separate the main design area from the edges, creating a more layered and structured look.

Final File Requirements

The final file size depends on the style of Twilly you choose. Here are the correct file dimensions:

Angled Twilly

• File size: 11.4 cm wide × 86 cm high
• Main design area: 10 cm wide × 86 cm high
• Bleed: 0.7 cm on both the left and right sides

Straight Twilly

• File size: 11.4 cm wide × 87.4 cm high
• Main design area: 10 cm wide × 86 cm high
• Bleed: 0.7 cm on all four sides

Understanding these file requirements will help you submit a complete and accurate design, making sure your Twilly scarf looks exactly as you imagined.
