When creating a custom silk scarf with ELLESILK, you may notice the option “Upload Your Design.” Many customers are unsure what type of image they should provide. Should it be a photo of a finished scarf? A fashion mockup? A logo?
The answer is: upload the artwork that you want to be printed on your scarf.
A silk scarf design file is the flat artwork used for printing. It is the original design before the scarf is folded, sewn, hemmed, or worn.
Understanding a Silk Scarf Design File
A design file is a two-dimensional image that shows the complete scarf pattern from edge to edge.
For example, if you are creating a 90 × 90 cm square silk scarf, your artwork should normally be a square file with the full design displayed on a flat surface. Every element you want to appear on the scarf—patterns, illustrations, colors, logos, text, or borders—should already be arranged in this artwork.
A simple way to understand it: if the scarf were placed completely flat on a table and photographed from directly above, the image would look similar to the design file we need for printing.
Design File vs. Finished Scarf Image
One of the most common mistakes in custom scarf orders is uploading a finished product image instead of the actual artwork.
A photo of a model wearing a scarf, a folded scarf image, or a 3D mockup can show the style and overall feeling you want, but it cannot be directly used for printing. These images contain folds, shadows, perspective, and background elements that are not part of the actual print design.
For silk printing, we need a clean, flat artwork file that shows exactly what should appear on the fabric.
Preparing Your Artwork File
The best file to upload is always the highest-quality original artwork. Common formats include JPG, PNG, TIFF, PDF, AI, and PSD.
Your artwork should match the shape and proportions of your chosen scarf size. A square scarf requires square artwork, while a long scarf requires a design with the correct rectangular proportion.
If your design includes important elements such as a logo, text, signature, or illustration, please consider their placement carefully. Since silk scarves are finished with hand-rolled or machine-stitched edges, some space near the border is needed for hemming.
As a general guideline, keep important details at least 2–3 cm away from the edges to protect them during the finishing process.
Why Resolution Matters: The 300 DPI Rule
A design that looks sharp on a phone screen may not remain sharp when enlarged to the actual size of a silk scarf.
For high-quality silk printing, we recommend artwork at 300 DPI at the final print size. This allows fine details, delicate lines, patterns, and text to be reproduced clearly on silk.
Please note that changing a low-resolution image from 72 DPI to 300 DPI does not add real detail. The original file needs to contain enough pixels or vector information from the beginning.
For the best results, avoid screenshots, images downloaded from social media, or files compressed through messaging apps. Original high-resolution photos, vector files, or professional design files will always provide better printing results.
Only Have a Logo, Photo, or Inspiration Image?
Many customers have a creative idea but do not yet have a complete scarf design. That is perfectly fine.
You can provide your logo, personal photo, illustration, artwork, or even a reference image showing the style you like. These materials help our designers understand your vision and develop the right direction for your scarf.

Before submitting your file, we recommend checking the following:
- The artwork matches the size and proportion of your chosen scarf.
- The file is high resolution (300 DPI at actual print size is recommended).
- All patterns, colors, logos, and text are complete.
- Important elements are placed away from the edges.
- The original file is provided whenever possible.
For professional projects, CMYK files or Pantone color references are welcome when available. Please note that colors may appear slightly different between a digital screen and printed silk, as screens display color through light while silk reflects light through its natural texture and sheen.
