Nanjing · A Private Immersion into the Art of Imperial Brocade
From $850 per guest | Private or small-group experiences | Multilingual service available

Among the world’s finest crafts, one rivals haute couture and Persian tapestry in complexity and grandeur—China’s Yunjin Brocade

Imagine a textile woven from gold thread, pure silk, and even peacock feathers.
A process so intricate that two skilled artisans, working eight hours a day, produce less than 10 centimeters of cloth.
A tradition so revered, it once clothed emperors—and still embodies a nation’s highest ideals of craftsmanship and beauty.

This is Nanjing Yunjin, or “Cloud Brocade.” Born in China’s ancient capital and perfected over centuries, it is not merely fabric—it is a living record of imperial power, sacred symbolism, and artistic mastery.

Yunjin is the only surviving imperial weaving tradition in China and a UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Once exclusive to royal courts, it is still used in state ceremonies, diplomatic gifts, and cultural preservation.

Each piece of Yunjin requires over 11,000 warp threads, with the pattern meticulously decoded into thousands of hand-drawn cells, forming what is known as a “design draft” or yijiangtu—essentially a woven algorithm.
These instructions are manually converted into a system of loops and knots called a “flower template,” which is mounted on a massive 5.6m-long, 4m-tall wooden loom. Two artisans work in harmony: one above to lift threads, one below to pass the shuttle.
Even today, no machine can replicate this process.

This is not a show. You are not a spectator. You are a participant.

For one extraordinary day, you will trace the path of gold thread through time—by weaving, dyeing, sailing the Qinhuai River, and creating your own piece of imperial textile heritage.
