Design Hand-Rolled Scarf: Edges Details You Should Know

hand-rolled hem design tips

If you’re customizing a silk scarf and have chosen a hand-rolled edge finish, you might notice something unexpected when we send you a proof:

“Why is there a colored border around my design? I didn’t include that in my artwork.”

Great question — and the answer lies in the craftsmanship behind a luxury scarf.
This article explains what a hand-rolled edge actually is, how it affects your design file, and how we prepare that edge for production.

What Is a Hand-Rolled Edge — and Why Does It Matter?

The hand-rolled edge is one of the most iconic finishes for high-end silk scarves.
It involves rolling about 1.5 cm of fabric inward along all four sides and then hand-stitching it in place using fine, invisible stitches.

Once complete, only a very narrow edge (about 0.2 mm) is visible from the front — just enough to add a subtle, sculptural line that sets hand-finished scarves apart from machine-sewn ones.

This edge serves two key visual purposes:

  • It adds a soft, dimensional frame to the scarf — elegant, not rigid
  • It can be colored to create contrast or harmony, depending on the look you want

Some designers opt for tone-on-tone subtlety, while others use the edge to create a gallery-like frame that enhances the overall artwork.

So How Should You Prepare Your Design File?

If you selected a hand-rolled edge, you don’t need to manually add extra space or borders in your design. We take care of that for you.

Specifically:

  • We automatically add a 1.5 cm edge around your uploaded design
  • This edge is filled with the hand-rolled edge color you selected at checkout

You can choose:

  • “Same as background” – for a seamless look
  • “Custom color” – for intentional contrast or framing

Want Full Control of the Edge Color?

If you’re aiming for a specific visual effect or want brand-level precision, we welcome color codes. You can send us:

  • Pantone
  • RGB or HEX values

We’ll use your exact color for the rolled edge extension.

Design Tip: A Contrasting Edge Can Elevate the Whole Scarf

Even though the edge is small, the right color choice can have a big impact.
Here are some ideas we’ve seen work beautifully:

  • Navy on blush pink — classic and crisp
  • Gold edge on florals — warm and luxurious
  • Black on abstract prints — strong and modern

Think of it like choosing a picture frame — sometimes a little contrast makes the art pop.

Why Does the Proof Look Like There’s a Border?

In the proof, we show the entire printable area, including the extended 1.5 cm edge.
This is necessary for transparency — so you can see exactly what color the rolled edge will be.

But in the final product, this area is rolled inward and stitched. From the front of the scarf, it’s barely visible — not a border, not a frame, just a fine, elegant finish.

Your actual artwork will appear edge-to-edge with no blank margins, no visual interruption, and no “boxed-in” look.

Understanding how hand-rolled edges are made can help you design more confidently — and with better results.
At the end of the day, the rolled edge is more than just a technical detail. It’s part of what gives your scarf its structure, its finish, and its luxury feel.
