Beyond their role as fashion accessories, they are also commonly worn around the neck, shoulders, and head to provide coverage from the sun. However, the UV protection of lightweight silk can vary depending on factors such as fabric weight, weave structure, density, and color, and should not be considered equivalent to that of professionally rated sun-protective fabrics.
Building on our existing custom silk scarf service, ElleSilk has developed a new product: UPF50+ Sun Protective Custom Silk Scarves. Made from 100% natural silk, these scarves retain the lightness, breathability, and natural drape of silk while adding professionally tested UV protection.
This is more than a functional upgrade to our custom silk scarves. It also represents ElleSilk’s exploration of how functional textile technology can be applied to natural silk.
From Custom Silk Scarves to Functional Sun-Protective Silk
ElleSilk has long provided custom silk scarf manufacturing services for brands, designers, and bespoke projects. Customers can submit their own artwork, brand elements, or original designs, which are digitally printed onto 100% silk to create scarves with distinctive patterns and brand identities.
Sun-protective silk is a further development of this service.
It retains the essential qualities of our custom silk scarves—natural silk, personalized printing, a lightweight feel, and fluid drape—while adding professionally tested UV protection.
For brands developing spring and summer collections, resort wear, outdoor-inspired collections, or functional products made from natural materials, sun-protective silk offers an alternative to conventional synthetic sun-protective fabrics.
Bringing Professional UV Protection to Natural Silk
ElleSilk’s sun-protective silk fabric is based on 100% natural silk twill and enhanced through a specialized UV-protective functional finishing process.
The UV-protective performance is achieved through functional finishing at the fabric level rather than by incorporating UV-blocking components into the silk fibers themselves. After treatment, the fabric provides significantly enhanced UV protection. However, achieving a high UPF rating is only part of the challenge.
If a functional finish makes the fabric noticeably heavier, reduces breathability, or compromises silk’s softness and drape, a high UPF result alone would not meet our expectations for a silk product.
This became the central technical balance in developing our sun-protective silk: enhancing the UV protection of natural silk while minimizing the impact of functional finishing on its lightness, breathability, hand feel, and drape.
After extensive testing, we achieved a balance that meets these requirements. Compared with ElleSilk’s regular silk twill, the sun-protective fabric has a slightly drier, less slippery hand feel, but the difference is subtle. Its natural drape also remains largely unchanged.
UPF 329: Measuring Sun Protection Through Test Data
UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, is a widely used rating for measuring how effectively a fabric blocks ultraviolet radiation. Similar to SPF (Sun Protection Factor) used for sunscreen, UPF indicates a fabric’s ability to protect against UV radiation. The higher the UPF value, the lower the proportion of UV radiation that passes through the fabric and the greater the level of protection.
For example, a UPF 50 fabric allows approximately 1/50 of UV radiation to pass through under the relevant test conditions, meaning it blocks approximately 98%.

Professional testing of ElleSilk’s current 16 momme sun-protective silk recorded an initial UPF value of 329 and UVA transmittance of just 1.95%, placing the fabric firmly within the UPF50+ protection category. Rather than relying on a general claim that “silk naturally protects against the sun,” these results provide a direct and measurable indication of the UV protection achieved by the functional silk fabric.
Testing Silk from 11 to 22 Momme
Fabric specification was another important consideration during development.
We tested different silk specifications ranging from 11 to 22 momme, comparing their overall performance in terms of lightness, breathability, durability, print quality, and compatibility with the functional finishing process.
Lighter silk offers excellent breathability and an airy feel, but as the fabric becomes lighter, balancing UV protection, finishing stability, and durability becomes more challenging. Heavier silk offers greater structure and substance, but may not be ideal for silk scarves where a lightweight wearing experience is important.
After comprehensive testing, 14 momme and 16 momme were selected as the primary specifications for ElleSilk’s sun-protective custom silk scarves, providing a strong balance of lightness, drape, print performance, functional finishing, and durability.
UV Protection After Repeated Washing
For a fabric whose UV protection is achieved through functional finishing, the initial UPF value is only one part of its performance. How well that protection is retained through everyday use and repeated washing is equally important.
According to our current test results, the fabric continues to provide professional UV protection after repeated washing and meets the corresponding sun-protection testing requirements.
With normal care, the fabric can still retain effective UV-protective performance after approximately 20 washes. The protection, however, is not permanent. As the number of wash cycles continues to increase, UV-protective performance will gradually decline.
Custom Print Color Control
For customized silk scarves, UV protection is only one part of the equation—precise color reproduction is equally important to the quality of the finished product.
The UV-protective finishing process can influence the final appearance of printed colors. For custom brand projects with strict brand guidelines and artwork accuracy requirements, UV protection and print execution cannot be treated as separate production steps.
To solve this, ElleSilk integrates finishing and printing into a unified, closed-loop color calibration workflow:
Print Testing → Color Adjustment → UV-Protective Finishing → Final Color Confirmation → Performance Evaluation
During sampling, we evaluate how the UV-protective finishing process affects the printed colors and make the necessary color adjustments before bulk production. This allows the final scarf, after functional finishing, to remain as close as possible to the intended artwork and color standard.
This meticulous process is precisely why custom sun-protective silk requires a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ). Every bespoke run requires dedicated strike-offs, chromatic testing, and calibrated finishing baths. The MOQ is not an arbitrary threshold, but a quality assurance standard that guarantees batch-to-batch color fidelity and uncompromised UV performance from the first piece to the last.
Sun-Protective Silk vs. Regular Silk Twill
The difference between sun-protective silk and regular silk is not simply a matter of whether one “protects against the sun” and the other does not.

Beyond Scarves: Expanding Sun Protection Across Silk
Sun-protective custom silk scarves are an important application of this technology, but they are not intended to be a standalone product.
The next stage is to apply professional UV-protective technology to natural silk fabrics with different structures, weights, and end uses, gradually developing a broader system of professional sun-protective silk fabrics.
Beyond custom sun-protective silk scarves, this approach can be extended to products such as:

- Lightweight sun-protective silk outerwear
- Relaxed-fit sun-protective silk shirts
- Lightweight spring and summer layering pieces
- Other sun-protective silk apparel and accessories worn close to the skin
Different products place different demands on the fabric.
Scarves emphasize lightness, drape, and print performance. Shirts need to balance wearing comfort with a certain degree of structure. Hoodies and lightweight outerwear require different levels of durability, fabric construction, and functional stability.
For this reason, our sun-protective silk development is not about applying the same 16 momme fabric to every product. Instead, it follows the same technical direction while adjusting fabric construction, weight, hand feel, and functional performance according to the requirements of each product category.
The underlying objective remains the same: to bring professional UV protection beyond conventional synthetic performance fabrics while expanding the possibilities of natural silk in functional textiles.
