Natural Path of ELLESILK Bedding: From Mulberry Leaf to Bed

silk bedding

From the mulberry fields of Suzhou to the silk bedding by your bed, every ELLESILK product takes a 60-day journey rooted in nature and craftsmanship. Every inch of fabric and every single fiber tells a quiet story—one of patience, care, and the pursuit of natural luxury.

This isn’t just the making of silk bedding. It’s a journey to redefine what “pure comfort” really means.

It Begins with a Leaf: The Finest Mulberry, from the Finest Soil

In Zhenze, a town in Suzhou near Lake Tai, the land is rich, and the water is pure. It’s one of China’s top mulberry-growing regions. ELLESILK sources only first-pick spring leaves from no-pesticide zones—leaves that are tender, full of moisture, and ideal for raising high-grade silkworms.

We don’t rush or force nature. No pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers. Just natural mulberry compost returned to the soil. The result? Lush green leaves filled with natural fragrance.

Hand-Raising Silkworms: For Stronger, Smoother Silk Bedding

Each silkworm is raised indoors in a clean, carefully controlled environment where light, temperature, and humidity mimic nature. Quiet and undisturbed, they grow stress-free.

To obtain higher-quality silk bedding, a healthy silkworm eats about 50 grams of mulberry leaves in 28 days before spinning its cocoon. We only keep the best—those with full, flawless, evenly layered cocoons. Over 30% of cocoons are rejected to ensure the highest silk quality.

Selecting Cocoons: A Perfectionist’s Craft in Bedding

For high-quality silk bedding, before boiling, each cocoon is inspected by hand—held, weighed, and checked under light:

  • Diameter: must be 2.8–3.2 cm
  • Shell thickness: 0.35–0.42 mm (too thin means weak silk, too thick means rough texture)
  • Color: pure ivory white, no dark spots

It takes 3,000–3,500 handpicked cocoons to make just one 1.5m-wide silk sheet or duvet cover.

Reeling & Spinning: Every Thread Shines Naturally

We use a traditional hot bath reeling method: cocoons are steamed briefly at 95°C, then reeled by hand in 43°C warm water. Each cocoon produces up to 1,200 meters of long filament silk. Slow-speed machines work with human hands to preserve the silk’s natural protein layer, reduce breakage, and enhance strength.

During spinning, multiple long filaments are twisted together without using glue or short fibers. That’s why ELLESILK silk feels so smooth, fluid, and skin-friendly.

Weaving: Where Texture Meets Elegance

Only Grade 6A long-strand mulberry silk yarn is used. Depending on the product, we choose different weave patterns:

  • Plain weave: tightest structure, smooth and stable—ideal for sheets and pillowcases
  • Twill weave: soft and drapey—great for duvets and cushions
  • Sateen weave: glossy and silky—used in premium pillowcases and throws

All fabrics are woven slowly using shuttle looms—less than 12 meters per hour. It’s twice the cost of industrial weaving but delivers finer texture and better durability, exceeding Level 4 in international friction tests.

After weaving, the fabric rests for 72 hours to naturally relax and regain its shape—a traditional step that’s now rare in fast production lines.

Plant-Based Dyeing: Real “Chemical-Free” Protection

Our dyeing process is one of our proudest achievements. We use no chemical dyes, preservatives, or color fixers. Every shade comes from plants:

  • Pagoda tree flower yellow: a soft, warm beige
  • Madder root red: rosy with natural antibacterial properties
  • Indigo leaf blue: deep lake blue, UV-resistant, long-lasting color
  • Gardenia green: calming and nature-inspired

The dyeing takes 72 hours and uses a “low-temp, low-pressure” method. Color is fixed using a Song Dynasty-inspired mineral salt technique that naturally bonds the dye to the silk proteins—solving the age-old problem of poor colorfastness in plant dyes.

The result? Fade-resistant colors that stay vibrant even after 30 washes, fully meeting modern home standards.

Silk Duvets: 8 Layers, 8,000 Pulls, All by Hand

Our duvets are made with 100% long-fiber silk, never synthetic blends. After steaming, each cocoon is manually opened into thin silk webs and layered one by one—eight layers per duvet.

No glue. No fixatives. Just the silk’s own natural adhesion. The continuous fiber structure ensures the duvet never clumps, flattens, or shifts—even after 10 years.

Soft and weightless, yet warm and breathable, it’s a favorite natural alternative to down in cold climates.

Silk Blankets: Fuzzy, Naturally

Unlike duvets, our silk blankets go through a special “low-temperature brushing” process. After weaving, the fabric is gently softened and brushed with fine needles, creating a natural fuzzy texture—like warm whipped cream.

No chemical softeners. No synthetic fuzzing agents. Just naturally enhanced comfort that stays breathable, skin-friendly, and cozy—perfect for winter snuggles.

Nature Is the Ultimate Luxury

Every step we take at ELLESILK is a conscious decision to slow down and stay close to nature. It’s not about speed or output—it’s about quality, comfort, and care.

From Suzhou to your home, it takes 60 days, 3,000+ cocoons, 150+ hours of handcraft, and zero chemical shortcuts.

And what you get is more than softness or shine. It’s nature’s touch, perfected by patience and dedication.
